  7. Storage, backups and recovery

The Stock Catalog dialog manages every stock the plugin knows: sheet goods, solid wood, edge banding, veneer, marble and hardware, with their dimensions, costs and profit margins. Open it from the Cabybara toolbar or menu ("Stock Catalog"), from the Stock Picker's "Open Stock Catalog..." button, or from the Production Report.

The catalog is one file per computer, shared by all models (see Storage). All dimensions are millimeters; cost labels are in IQD.

Layout

  • Header - title, entry count, an orange dot while the form has unsaved changes, and five catalog-wide buttons (Re-seed, Import, Merge, Backups, Export).
  • Left panel - the entry list with a filter box.
  • Right panel - the selected entry's edit form.
  • Footer - a collapsible Role Defaults panel.

Entry list

Entries are grouped by type (Sheet Good, Solid Wood, Edge Banding, Veneer, Marble, Hardware) and sorted by name inside each group. Each row shows the color swatch (striped when the stock has a grain direction), name, a thickness chip, the hardware subtype where present, and a small dot marking entries used as a role default. The filter box matches name or id.

Buttons below the list:

  • + Add - starts a new entry (defaults: Sheet Good, 18 mm, no grain, one 2440 x 1220 sheet size).
  • Duplicate - copies the selected entry as "name (Copy)" with a new id.
  • Delete - removes the selected entry after a confirmation that also warns how many panels in the current model use it ("N panel(s) in the model use this stock and will become Unassigned.").

Switching entries with unsaved edits asks "You have unsaved changes. Do you want to discard them?" (Keep Editing / Discard).

Entry form

For an existing entry the form also shows where it is used: "Not used in this model" or "Used by N panel(s) in this model" with a Select in model button (shown while the count is above zero) that selects the top-level components containing those panels - whole cabinets, not the individual panels - so the selection count can be smaller than the panel count.

Fields by section (sections collapse by clicking their header):

Identity - all types.

  • Name - display name, e.g. "Oak Plywood 18mm". Required.
  • ID - internal identifier, lowercase letters, digits and underscores only (e.g. "oak_ply_18"). Required, typed once at creation and permanently read-only afterwards - panels reference stocks by this id.
  • Type - Sheet Good, Solid Wood, Edge Banding, Hardware, Veneer or Marble. Changing the type of an existing entry silently drops the fields the new type does not have (e.g. switching to Hardware discards thickness, grain and sheet sizes).
  • Subtype - hardware only: None, Drawer Rail, Door Handle, Hinge, Leg or Other. The subtype decides which pickers offer the entry (the cabinet dialog's leg picker lists only leg hardware, etc.).

Properties - all types except hardware.

  • Thickness - mm. Required and must be positive.
  • Grain Direction - None, Along Length or Along Width. A grained stock restricts how its panels may rotate during nesting.

Hardware Dimensions - hardware only.

  • Length - mm. Drives the generated hardware geometry (leg height, rail length, hinge length); hardware without a length is skipped when generating, so set it.

Visual - all types.

  • Material - a SketchUp material from Cabybara's materials folder on this computer (the folder is set in Settings; the list is the same in every model), or None. This is the look panels get when their own Material is left unset. A stored material missing from the folder stays listed as "(missing from materials folder)" so saving does not wipe it.
  • Color - fallback color as a #RRGGBB hex value with a color picker, used for swatches and when no material is set.

Sheet Sizes - all types except hardware.

  • A list of width x height rows in mm, each with an optional name; "Add Size" appends a 2440 x 1220 row. These are the sheet dimensions nesting packs onto.

Cost & Supplier - all types; the cost unit follows the type:

  • Sheet Good / Veneer: Per m2 (IQD) - with a live hint showing the approximate cost per first-listed sheet size.
  • Solid Wood / Edge Banding: Per meter (IQD).
  • Hardware: Per piece (IQD).
  • Marble: Per m, longest side (IQD).
  • Supplier and Notes - free text, optional.

Customer Pricing - all types.

  • Profit % - per-stock margin for customer pricing; blank uses the global default.
  • Flat profit (per part) - a fixed amount added once per part using this stock; overrides Profit %. Suited to per-piece hardware.

Save applies the entry; validation problems appear as messages (missing required fields, invalid id characters, non-positive thickness, and so on).

Header actions

  • Re-seed - adds any missing shipped default entries, fills in missing or cleared fields on shipped entries, and fills unset role defaults. It never overwrites a value you changed, but a shipped entry's field or a role default that you cleared to blank may be re-filled from the defaults.
  • Import - replaces the whole catalog (entries and role defaults) with a chosen JSON file. Every entry is validated first; a bad file changes nothing.
  • Merge - adds entries from a catalog file without touching existing ids, and fills only unset role defaults. This is the safe way to share a catalog between computers.
  • Backups - restores the catalog from one of the automatic backups (replaces the current catalog).
  • Export - saves the catalog as a JSON file.

Role Defaults

The footer panel holds one dropdown per part role: Sides, Sink Frame, Top/Bot, Bottom, Shelves, Fiber, Door, Drawer, Rails, Dividers, Front Rail, Face Panel, Gola, Drawer Rail, Door Handle, Hinge, Leg. These are the stocks new cabinets pre-assign to each part group; the last four list only hardware entries, the others only non-hardware. Changes save immediately. Deleting an entry clears any role default pointing at it.

Sink Frame is special: it is not a part group but the Frame stock the Ground Cabinet's Sink preset applies (plywood in the shipped catalog). Leave it blank and the Sink preset leaves the Frame stock unchanged.

Editing and deleting: what happens to existing models

Panels store only the stock id. Editing an entry (costs, thickness, color, sizes) therefore updates every panel referencing it the next time anything reads the catalog - reports, pricing and nesting pick the new values up automatically, though already-painted faces are not repainted. Deleting an entry leaves its panels pointing at a missing id: reports and pricing show them as "Unassigned" until they are repainted with the Stock Painter. An id can never be renamed; to effectively rename, Duplicate, then Delete the original and repaint its panels.

Storage, backups and recovery

The catalog lives in one JSON file per computer (%APPDATA%\Cabybara\catalog.json on Windows) - not inside the model, so it applies to every project on that machine. It is seeded from the shipped defaults on first use. Every save writes a timestamped backup first (the newest 10 are kept), a corrupted file recovers automatically from the newest valid backup, and plugin updates patch newly introduced fields into old catalogs without overwriting anything you set or cleared.
